The Window Shutters are in. A Master Bedroom sneak peek…

On our last trip upstate, I took photos of the new window shutters we had recently installed in the Master Bedroom.

Happy Sunday everyone! Did you have a great weekend?

I love this cool and crisp weather we are having in the North East… It was cold enough in the country last week to make the first fire of the season!

I am SO excited to finally get our shutters. We ordered them back in March, and because they are custom made… and  because we had a busy summer, the installation dates got pushed back week after week…

First, let’s take a look at the Master Bedroom before:

before

This photo was taken the first night we spent in the house… notice the mattress is on the floor  : )

The curtains you see in the photo were left by the previous owner. It was very kind of her, but I did not like them… To those, we added temporary blackout curtains, because the bedroom gets a lot of sun in the morning and it was waking up the twins a bit too early – not good!

Embarrassed to say – this is what we lived with for a while:

Before the shutters installation, I had to paint the windows frames the same off white as the shutters, which took some time…. Here is the process:

first I had to sand both window frames…

then I had to wipe down the surface with a damp cloth… I used Windex (very little) because it evaporates before it can seep into the wood…

with the prep out-of-the-way, I started applying the Valspar primer+paint thinking it was going to take just 2 coats… HA!

work in progress… I had to sand after each coat of paint…

this is a big window and it took a long time… as you can see I do not use painter’s tape… Why you ask? because I’m a glutton for punishment, that’s why…

Here is the final photo… it took a total of 4 coats! The goal was to match the window frames to the shutters. At Lowes they recommended Satin finish, but I have to tell you that after 2 coats the look was nothing close to “satin”… it was more like fine sand paper. The folks at Lowes were very nice and exchanged my paint for Semi-gloss and back to work I went with 2 more coats…

and Voila… What do you think? Do you like them or do you prefer curtains?

To me nothing says country like wooden shutters. My goal was to get them in before June in order to sleep with the windows open during the summer months, but due to our apartment sale in the city we did not spend that much time in the country this summer…

The bed as you can see is new as well… Long story there…I will cover it in an upcoming post.

As requested by some of you I will link to the product sources from now on. The Shutters are made by Graber and they sell though Lowes among other retail outlets… click HERE to be directed to their website if you are interested…

The price for both windows was close to $1200 for faux wood.  Real wood is just a bit more expensive… I chose faux because I was going to paint everything white anyway, so the grain of the wood did not matter, and because they are sturdier and hold up to the elements pretty well…

Even though it took a long time to get them, I am very happy with the service Graber provided. Their staff was super professional and the product is very well made. Overall they get an A++ from us. In fact I like these shutters so much, I might order them for one other room in the house…(just don’t tell my husband…lol)

That is it for today. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this post… please leave a comment…

Wishing you a great week ahead and as always – thank you so much for stopping by for a visit!

It looks fantastic Emily… I like shutters very much…and I like them with curtains too… Wv have only shutters in France (outdoors)… although in winter I miss curtains… so I am always undecided! xv

Thank you Vicki. I love the outside shutters in France, and I wish that was an option for us as well…but it’s not. I’m thinking of adding some curtains as well… I just love the way they soften the lines of a room… we’ll see. It’s work in progress
